Choosing the Artwork for your New Home

Dees Funky Art creates beautiful hand crafted Australian paintings. Dee is an accomplished artist and has been selling commercially for over ten years. Her art is created to be affordable so everyone can enjoy artwork in their home or business. One common question that customers ask is how to choose the right art. The following are Dees tips on what to consider when buying her paintings.

1. Create Cohesion with colours through art

Your artwork is the best way to unite all of your décor colours in the one space. It is essential for good design. The right artwork pieces will be effective in using paint where hues can be lightened, deepened, saturated or toned. The art will give your room balance in colours and tones.

2. Big Walls need Big Art

Large walls require balance and symmetry with artwork. The art should be proportionate to the wall dimensions. If you select a small artwork for a big space, its impact will be lost. By using a large painting, it will create a focal point and give your space some warmth. Alternatively, choosing a smaller set of paintings grouped together works great. In addition you can explore asymmetrical and symmetrical layouts to figure out what style works best.

3. What to do with a TV Wall

Television walls can be difficult to style. Especially if you have a low TV cabinet. It is possible to balance paintings above and either side -just work with the existing lines. A great solution can be a group of same sized artwork, hand painted and original, hung across the entire wall. Dees Funky Art sells affordable artwork sets. Perfect for a TV wall.

4. Use Painting Shapes to Link and Minimise the lines in your Home

Paintings can be used to soothe architectural lines and balance in your space. Because spaces are mostly divided by horizontal and vertical lines, if they are disconnected it can create a disjointed look. Therefore artwork that brings proportion to these spaces will connect the lines. In addition they can be used to give shape to any imbalances.

5. Paintings to Style and Theme your Home

Decorating and art provides a way to put your own unique style and theme in your space. You need to have some kind of investment in the paintings you select. This way your style will shine through. Do the paintings make you feel happy? And do they suit your personality? What colours do you like? We can speak with you to commission an extremely affordable custom design of paintings. Dee is a professional Australian artist and can take your style and transfer it to her paintings. You won’t be disappointed! Finally, if you just browse the existing selection, go with what you like and colours to suit your décor. You can’t go wrong.

Other Considerations

The above 5 tips are the most important and easy to follow guides for choosing the right art. However if you would like further information, we have put together more detailed information.

Think scale

Scale will make or break your area. So when choosing your paintings always take into account the size. Its no good having a beautiful but tiny painting on a large white wall. Or vice-versa, having a giant painting that overtakes everything else in the room. Think about the future also. If you intend to ever move the art, it needs to fit into another space. Therefore buying paintings of a standard size will be an easy way to move pieces around your home. Paintings measuring between 30cm to 120cm are considered standard sizes.

Go With your Gut

When it comes to Art, if you find yourself connecting to a painting in a positive manner, that’s a good sign you will continue to admire it in your home. It’s easier to find a spot in your home for a painting you love and want to display, rather than a painting you aren’t attracted to. One important fact to remember and have in hand is the measurements for your space. If you love a painting but it is too large or too small for your space – don’t buy it. Because the feel of the painting will change if its displayed in a cramped space or swamped by too much space. You want a painting to bring dimension to your space, not make it feel closed in.

Go for an Original

A beautiful original painting brings your personality to your home. The painting will bring a conversation starter to your space. People always admire original artwork, and therefore you will always have an ice breaker. Dee has created many personalised, original pieces of artwork, working with clients styles and personalities.

Instant Colour Palette

Choosing colours for your interiors can be daunting. There are numerous shades, tones and choices. One way to save on home painting costs and colour mistakes is to use wall art for colour on plain walls. Once you find a painting that you love, it can be used for inspiration for your rooms eventual colour palette. The first step is to pick out two or three shades from your paintings that you’d like to incorporate into your decor. Choose the dominant colour, as well as a few additional shades that you’d like to pull out as accents. Then, look for those colours in the items you use to decorate your space.

Set the Right Tone

Before selecting your painting, decide if you want your home to have a casual or formal vibe. If more casual, then opt for light and bright colours to give off a casual feel. Whereas a painting with distinct lines and structure in dark colours creates a more formal tone.

Create a Focal Point

A room can have more than one area that draws your attention. Think about if you want a single point to define your room or a painting set to compliment your colour scheme. Just make sure you do not add too much and create a cluttered look.

Set a Budget

Your budget is the number one factor when buying artwork. You won’t enjoy a painting if it makes you eat baked beans every night for a year. Dees Funky Art wants original art to be available to everyone at an affordable price. Which means offering great quality and along with low cost prices. Also you can buy paintings for your home in stages. The living areas are a good place to start first as you will spend a lot of time in these rooms.

Hang it right

Make sure the artwork is hung at the correct height. Often people hang pictures too high; you should not have to strain your neck to see them. It should be approximately eye level so you won’t be looking down or up at the art. In rooms where people are usually sitting down – such as a living room or dining room – eye-level will be at a seated position so artwork could be hung a little lower. Roughly one hand width above a couch is a good way of getting the right height.

Get the Right Light

Do not overlook the importance of the right lighting for your art. Dimly lit artwork will lose impact and look dull. Whereas great lighting will make the painting really pop. You can even buy and have special down-lights to install over your artwork.

Don’t be Matchy

Your new artwork does not have to match the paint colour or furniture in your room. Use small accent pieces like vases and cushions to tie your room together. That means you can make a bold statement with a beautiful colour and abstract designed painting.

And Lastly…

Styling Tips

how to hang artHang your art above furniture to allow each to highlight the other. You can provide a visual link between the two with a lamp, décor piece or vase.

If you are hanging art behind a couch, leave 30cm so you won’t bump against the art.
Smaller paintings can be propped on a shelf, mantel or table. Use blu-tac (carefully) to secure the bases if you are worried the art may fall. Then style with books, ceramics and flowers. Have a go at creating a gallery wall – it doesn’t have to be symmetrical – lay it out on the floor first to make sure you are happy with the arrangement.

Dees Funky Art provides affordable and original canvas paintings that are ready to hang. They are on stretched canvas with abstract design. Timber art with resin coating can also be purchased. Her artwork has sold all over Australia and internationally. Home owners, Business owners, showrooms, display homes are regular purchasers. My affordable, original, modern, abstract painting life!

With a little touch of canvas, timber, resin, brushes and lots of love thrown in…

Paintings and artwork are a huge chunk of happiness in my life. I pause and look at original artwork whenever I can. I noticed years ago, that there was a lack of decorator paintings available at an affordable outlay. It is easy to find vibrant wall art, but the price tag can often be out of reach.

I researched and found there were prints mass produced and available to purchase at a low cost, from discount stores, or there were beautiful original paintings to purchase online, in galleries or classy homewares stores, at a price that would be hard for the general population to afford.

Abstract canvas art is popular right now, along with round/circle art, on timber with a resin seal to give a glass like look. People want a contemporary feel and designer look on their walls and still be able to pay the bills! So, my focus was to create hand painted, original art, which most CAN afford.Especially if I offered layby and had sale items as well.

Free postage/delivery to anywhere in Australia was important for me also. I didn’t want a potential client to fall in love with a painting, only to then do a postage calculation and realise it was going to be too much for them to fork out all told!!!So what you see, and the price you find, is the bottom line with my business.

I like to provide paintings on stretched canvas, as they need no further framing and are ready to hang, or on timber art boards (round being in demand) which are streamlined, and also require no further expense just put them up on your wall and make a statement!

Resin gives artwork a very classy look, and lots of buyers are after resin pieces right now, so that is something I have recently added to my collection. Resin costs and also the preparation and time needed to mix and apply this medium does push the cost of artwork up, (I do offer resin paintings at the most competitive price I can) which is why it is just one of my styles, and my modern and inexpensive pieces will always be created and up for sale.

I hope this gives everyone a small insight into what goes through my head when planning a new painting creation Well, a lot of other stuff goes through my head, like ALL day, EVERY day, but that is a story for another blog entry.

Be kind and create xxx

WELCOME!

Here I am, with my new website up and running!

So, what have I been up to this week? Well, I am busy with my new line of abstract, round resin artwork! I am thrilled with how the resin brings my paintings to life, and makes the colours and patterns so vibrant! This type of artwork has been in demand for display homes/show homes and cafe’s, hotels and offices, as well as, of course, our homes 🙂

It has been a bit of trial and error with a couple of pieces needing a couple of coats of resin to correct my little “stuff ups” 😀 BUT, one thing I have found, is that resin is VERY forgiving!

Of course my whole business vision is affordable artwork, so I will continue to paint unique, one off abstracts on stretched canvas, as well as flowers, dragonflies and the signature pieces, so there will always be the affordable options, to style your home on a budget.

As always, free delivery anywhere in Australia is a given, so the price you see, is the price you pay at checkout, no little surprises!

Signing off now, resin is sticky, and my foot has a leaf, fibres from an old rug I have covering my workspace in my garagio (garage studio :D), and a piece of cardboard I use for packing artwork to send stuck to it!!! I need to deal with this, somehow I can’t see these things leaving my person without a struggle…

Be creative!

Dee xxx

Different Strokes – Dee’s Funky Art Blog

NOVEMBER 2015 – Feathers everywhere!

Often as I am planning my next piece of artwork, or actually painting, I find myself daydreaming about the type of person who would like this particular style I am working on. Oh man, I am THE biggest over-thinker (is that a real word and should it be hyphenated???) ever born! So, I decided a little blog might be in order to share some of my thoughts and musings. Short and light, just about what I have been up to and anything else that is rattling around in my mind at the time 🙂 Look out 😀

The “flavour of the month” in November has most definitely been FEATHERS! I have always had a silver, textured feather as part of my core range, but was asked to paint a different style of feather by a supportive client, and when it was finished, I shared it on my facebook Dee’s Funky Art page, only to be OVERWHELMED by the interest in it!!!

Well, it didn’t take much more to convince me that feathers were going to play a big part in my month! And take over my mind. Of course I then became obsessed (I am sure I have an obsessive personality, as once I get right into something, I tend to go crazy with it and it drives my family nuts!!!) by feathers, so have been adding to my range, and finding that all types of feathers seem to be in demand right now. I have been painting fluffy feathers, shabby feathers and neat feathers! Even peacock feathers! On large canvases, as a part of dream catchers and on little canvases, perfect and affordable for small gifts with an inspirational word or the name of a loved one added.

I think most of all, I have loved hearing the stories of why feathers have significance to those who are drawn to them. It is often a symbol for a loved one who has passed away (what a beautiful tribute to keep) or a sign for some, that angels are around, you are watched over and looked after. I think no matter what meaning feathers hold for you, they are fascinating and interesting and one of those truly, amazing things that nature gives us.
Until next time, be creative and engage in random acts of kindness when you can 🙂 And may angels be around you!
Wishing you all love and happiness, Dee x
